I’ve used this one at sea
I’ve personally used GigSky on a cruise, here’s what worked, what didn’t, and whether I’d buy it again.
What is GigSky? It’s a mobile data provider that sells eSIM plans for use at sea, on land, and in the air. Rather than paying a per-day fee, you buy a fixed amount of data upfront, install it on your phone before you travel, and it activates when you need it — no swapping physical SIM cards, no separate purchase for each leg of a trip. It is one of two providers recommended on this site for cruise connectivity, alongside Maya Mobile.

Company Background and Infrastructure
GigSky was founded in 2010 and was Apple’s launch partner for the first eSIM-capable iPhone in 2018, making it one of the earlier established names in the eSIM industry rather than a recent entrant.
The company operates as a Heavy MVNO — a Mobile Virtual Network Operator that owns and manages a meaningful part of its own network infrastructure, rather than simply reselling access to someone else’s. This distinction has two practical consequences for a cruise traveller:
- A single eSIM can be reused across multiple plans. Once installed, it does not need to be reinstalled each time a new plan is purchased — a step several competitors require.
- The GigSky app remains reachable even with no active data and no WiFi. This means additional data can be purchased directly through the app without needing to find another way online first.
GigSky’s eSIMs are provisioned in the United States, which the company states supports its security and regulatory compliance standards. For more on how the underlying technology works in general, see the GSMA’s eSIM overview.
Coverage
GigSky’s network spans four distinct environments:
- At sea — over 280 cruise ships, through partnerships branded “Cellular at Sea”
- On land — 200+ countries and territories
- In the air — 22 international airlines offer GigSky inflight connectivity
- On ferries — coverage extends to ferry routes where standard land-based mobile networks reach the water, including parts of the Mediterranean (Greece, Italy, Croatia), the Nordic countries, and the UK and Ireland. This is not guaranteed mid-crossing on open water — it depends on proximity to shore-based network coverage along the route.
How Cruise Coverage Actually Works
GigSky markets its cruise product as “Cruise + Land” — meaning a single Fixed Data or Essentials plan functions both while the ship is at sea and once passengers are in port, without needing to buy or activate anything separately for each. This matters because ship WiFi packages typically only cover time on board, requiring a separate solution the moment you step off in port; GigSky’s plans are designed to cover both by default.
What GigSky Sells
Fixed Data plans. A set amount of data, bought upfront for a fixed duration — for example, 3GB over 15 days. Usage is unrestricted within that allowance. Because the plan is pre-paid and capped, it is not possible to run up an unexpected bill; the risk runs the other way — running out of data before the allowance period ends, if too little was bought to start with.
Essentials plans. A cheaper tier offering unlimited use, but restricted to a defined list of apps: messaging (iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Instagram), maps (Apple Maps, Google Maps), email (Gmail, Outlook), ride-hailing (Uber, Lyft, Bolt, DiDi), and translation (iTranslate). Streaming, video calls, and large file transfers are not included. For a traveller whose actual needs are limited to messaging and navigation — a teenager’s phone is a common example — this is typically cheaper than buying general data for the same purpose.
GigSky One. A separate subscription product (25GB/50GB/75GB tiers, 120+ countries) aimed at frequent travellers and digital nomads. It is not part of GigSky’s cruise-specific line-up and is not covered further on this page.
Pricing
Current published GBP prices for GigSky’s cruise-relevant plans:
Fixed Data plans:
| Data | Duration | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 100MB | 7 days | Free (trial — see below) |
| 512MB | 1 day | £14.49 |
| 1GB | 7 days | £25.49 |
| 3GB | 15 days | £48.44 |
| 5GB | 30 days | £76.47 |
| 10GB | 30 days | £141.07 |
Essentials plans (unlimited, restricted to the app list above):
| Duration | Price |
|---|---|
| 1 day | £5.99 |
| 3 days | £16.14 |
| 5 days | £25.64 |
| 7 days | £33.24 |
| 10 days | £45.12 |
| 14 days | £56.52 |
The pricing structure rewards accurate estimation. Five separate 1GB top-ups cost approximately £127 in total, against £76.47 for a single 5GB plan bought upfront — the same volume of data for nearly £50 more, purely as a result of buying in small increments rather than one larger allowance. This matches my own experience using GigSky: underestimating and topping up cost noticeably more than buying the larger plan would have.
Prices are subject to change — GigSky runs periodic promotions — so treat these figures as a current guide and confirm pricing before purchase.
The Free Trial
GigSky offers a free 100MB, 7-day trial eSIM. This is enough to confirm that installation and activation work correctly and that signal is reachable at sea, without any financial commitment. For a first-time eSIM user, this is a practical way to test the process before purchasing a paid plan.
The Visa Cardholder Benefit
GigSky’s partnership with Visa gives eligible cardholders complimentary data, verified directly within the GigSky app.
- Visa Signature: 1GB of free international data, plus 20% off future plans
- Visa Infinite: 3GB of free international data, plus 30% off future plans
Both are valid for 15 days once activated, redeemable once per calendar year. Eligibility applies in over 175 countries and covers both the US/Canada and Latin America/Caribbean Visa card programmes, though exact allowances can vary by card issuer and region. The benefit covers mobile data only — voice calls and SMS are not included. Verification is done by entering card details in the GigSky app’s Visa Benefit section; once confirmed, available complimentary plans appear directly in the app.
Points to Note Before Buying
No refunds are issued, on any plan or top-up, whether used or not. Given the cost penalty for under-buying described above, the more economical approach is to purchase slightly more data than expected to need, rather than a smaller amount with the intention of topping up.
GigSky is not the lowest-cost option per gigabyte. Its pricing reflects coverage breadth and network infrastructure rather than competing purely on price. A traveller whose priority is not tracking data usage at all may find Maya’s daily-unlimited pricing model a better fit.
Inactive accounts can be closed. GigSky states that accounts inactive for 18 months may be closed, as can unregistered accounts within 30 days of creation. This does not affect a standard cruise purchase but is worth noting if an account is created and then not used for an extended period.
Who GigSky Suits Best
- Travellers who want a fixed, predictable cost and are willing to buy a margin above their expected usage.
- Families or groups sharing data via hotspot, where a capped total cost is preferable to an unpredictable daily rate.
- Eligible Visa cardholders, for whom the free data allowance can significantly reduce the overall cost.
- A traveller who only needs messaging and navigation — the Essentials plans are built specifically for that use case, at a lower cost than general data.

Curious what GigSky is actually like to use at sea? I tested it for two weeks on the MSC Virtuosa — read how it went.
Travellers who want an entirely flat rate with no usage cap and no need to estimate data requirements are generally better served by Maya. See the GigSky vs Maya comparison for a direct comparison of both.
